WRISC Family Violence Support Statement of Solidarity in response to recent deaths of women in the Ballarat region

The community of WRISC Family Violence Support stands in solidarity with the families of Samantha Murphy, Rebecca Young and Hannah McGuire.  Our heartfelt sympathies are extended to the families, the extended families, the friends, and all those who knew and loved these three women. Words cannot describe the impact these recent events will have on the Ballarat and surrounding communities for years and lifetimes to come.

Violence against women in any form is never an option.  WRISC’s core work is to support women and children who have been impacted by Family Violence.  Family Violence is preventable. WRISC understands that unless the whole of the Ballarat and surrounding communities come together and work together to address this current scourge in our community, WRISC’s work will never diminish.

The current escalation of gendered violence into murder is driven by gender inequality in our community.  This manifests as power and control in family violence situations and can escalate into physical violence and even murder. There is much within our community that each of us can do together ensure a world where there is safety, equality, and opportunity for all people.

The recent events have had devastating impacts. Women may be feeling unsafe and fearful or may be triggered by past events or circumstances.  If you feel you need help in relation to your situation or circumstances, please don’t hesitate to reach out by ringing The Orange Door (1800 219 819), WRISC Family Violence Support Inc (53 333 666), Berry St (53 305 000), 1800 RESPECT (1800737732), Safe Steps: 1800015188 After hours crisis response: 53313558 and in an emergency phone 000.
